Lemonade vs hiring with ChatGPT yourself

ChatGPT and Claude help with the writing and the reading. Lem, from Lemonade (makelemonade.io), sources, screens and introduces interested candidates, so the person running hiring only does the interviews.

Is ChatGPT enough for recruiting on its own?

Lem, Lemonade's AI recruiter, sources, screens and introduces interested candidates, so a founder or head of operations hiring alongside the day job only does the interviews. For an experienced hire, ChatGPT alone is not enough: it writes the job description and gives CVs a quick first read, but it works on what you give it, and the person you want is often busy in another job, not applying. Lem draws on Lemonade's talent pool, people it sources directly and applicants to your job posts, and only people who confirmed their interest reach your shortlist. First search free, then from £450 a role. No hire fee, on any plan. Prices correct as of 21 October 2026. We will refund your Search Fee if you don't interview any of our candidates.

Choose Lemonade when...

  • The hire has more than five years' experience, where Lem works best.
  • The person you want is busy in another job, not applying.
  • The search, the approaches and the follow-ups should be run for you.
  • Each candidate should be scored against your brief, with the reasoning shown.

Choose ChatGPT when...

  • Good applicants are already coming in and a quick first read is all that's needed.
  • A job description, interview plan or scorecard is needed today, for free.
  • The role is junior, hourly or high-volume, where a job ad brings plenty of people.
  • Hiring is rare, and writing every approach yourself is fine.

What Lem does that an assistant does not

Lem reaches the people who are not applying

ChatGPT and Claude can search the public web, but neither comes with a candidate database. When one recruiter tested chatbots for sourcing in April 2026, free ChatGPT made people up (most profile links did not exist) and the paid version still invented some. Claude declined to return candidate profiles.

Lem hunts day and night for the best candidates across three sources: Lemonade's talent pool, people Lem sources directly from LinkedIn and a database of about a billion profiles, and applicants to your job posts, including adverts you run yourself on Indeed or LinkedIn. That includes people busy in another job. Lem never approaches someone about a role at a company they have worked for.

Lem runs the approaches, the follow-ups and the record

With an assistant, every message is yours to write, send, chase and track. Fine for five people; hard work for fifty.

Lem approaches candidates by email and LinkedIn. Email approaches go up to three times over four days and stop the moment someone answers. Interested people confirm their interest on a short page, and that confirmation is their application. Request an intro and we can connect you in minutes.

Matching built on more than a million job matches

Lemonade's candidate-to-job matching is built on more than a million job matches and user feedback, and gets sharper as feedback comes in. Lem turns your brief into a weighted checklist: deal-breakers are hard filters, nice-to-haves add to the score, and gaps are shown as plainly as strengths. Every sourced candidate and every applicant to your job posts is scored this way, with the reasoning shown.

Who is accountable for the screening

AI ranking can carry bias: a 2024 study of three AI models (not ChatGPT or Claude) ranking 550+ real CVs found they favoured white-associated names 85% of the time and Black-associated names 9%. OpenAI's usage policies prohibit automating high-stakes employment decisions without human review. The ICO expects employers using automated hiring decisions to be clear with candidates, test for bias, and tell candidates how to challenge a decision and ask for a human review. With an assistant, that work sits with you.

The same checks apply to Lemonade, so ask us the same questions. If you add a video task, a person reviews the answers before anyone reaches you. For people Lem finds, Lem recommends and you decide; nobody Lem finds is turned down by software. Applications to an advertised role are screened automatically, and anyone turned down that way is told which check said no and can ask a person at Lemonade to look again. More on How Lem stays fair.

When ChatGPT is the better choice

ChatGPT wins on cost and on the writing. It is free, or $20 a month for ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro, and drafts a decent job description, interview plan and scorecard quickly. If the hire is mostly a writing problem, it is the cheapest good answer.

If a job ad brings in plenty of applicants, an assistant can also give them a quick first read. Paste your must-haves first and ask for a score against each, with a one-line reason. Remove names, photos and contact details; on ChatGPT Free, Plus or Pro, turn off "Improve the model for everyone" (on Claude's consumer plans, check the setting you chose). Check every claim against the CV before acting on it.

For junior, hourly or high-volume roles, a job board plus an assistant to sort the replies is usually the right setup: Lem works best for people with more than five years' experience and is a weaker fit for junior roles.

Using both

Use ChatGPT to draft the job description, paste it into Lem's brief and let Lem run the search. Keep the assistant for interview questions.

Lemonade does not handle offers: at the in-person interview stage, we recommend moving candidates into your ATS (how Lemonade works with your ATS).

Questions founders ask

What is the main difference between Lemonade and ChatGPT for recruiting?

ChatGPT and Claude mostly work on what you give them; they can browse the web, but finding, checking and contacting people stays with you. Lem sources, screens and introduces interested candidates: it draws on Lemonade's talent pool, people Lem sources directly and applicants to your job posts, scores each against your brief with the reasoning shown, approaches them by email and LinkedIn, and introduces only those who confirm their interest. Request an intro and we can connect you in minutes.

Can ChatGPT find candidates for me?

As of October 2026, ChatGPT and Claude can search and browse the public web: ChatGPT has a built-in browser and an agent mode in its Atlas browser, and paid Claude plans include Claude in Chrome. Neither comes with a candidate database, and in an April 2026 test, ChatGPT invented profiles (Claude declined to list any), so every name needs checking. The checking, contacting and tracking stay with you.

Is it legal to put candidate CVs into ChatGPT in the UK?

This is not legal advice. Pasting a CV into an assistant is processing personal data, so UK GDPR applies. The ICO suggests considering a DPIA, your lawful basis, bias, transparency and data minimisation before using AI in recruitment. Check your plan's settings: on ChatGPT Free, Plus and Pro, content may be used for training unless you turn it off; Claude's consumer plans let you choose.

Can ChatGPT write a job description?

Yes, and it is one of the best uses. Give it the role, level, salary range and what the person must have done before, then edit. Our guide shows how to write the job description section by section.

Does Lemonade use AI to screen candidates?

Yes. Every candidate is scored against your brief, with the reasoning shown and gaps as plain as strengths. A person reviews any video answers before anyone reaches you, and for the people Lem finds, you make every decision. See How Lem stays fair.

Who should just use ChatGPT?

Founders who already get enough good applicants, who are hiring for junior, hourly or high-volume roles, or who hire rarely and enjoy doing the outreach. A job ad plus an assistant is cheap and effective there; Lem works best for people with more than five years' experience.
